NAVARONE is a band with a Netherlands origin that creates beautiful and unique music by using elements from rock and pop.I had the honor to do this interview with Robin Assen (drums), over Skype.
Albums: A Darker Shade Of White (2012), Vim And Vigor (2014), Too Much Perspective (2016, EP)
Genres: Hard rock, alternative rock, progressive rock
Q: What inspired you to make music together?
We found that we had a certain common ground. We didn’t have similar music tastes, but we found a good level of music.
Q: How did you guys meet?
A: The Conservatory of Amsterdam and The Rock Academy.
Q: Why do you want to sing about what you write?
A: We have rock songs that we make serious and pop songs that are more easier for people to grasp to.
Q: What do you wish you had known before becoming a musician?
A: A lot of things. I wanted to be a musician at 16, and what do you know when you’re 16? But I’m quite happy at the things I’ve known.
Q: When things go downhill, such as your music, friendships, etc., how do you handle that?
A: With challenging life even more. Make powerful decisions which reaffirm you as a human being. Making good choices whatever the choice is.
Q: Tell me about the band’s members.
A: Merjin is the vocalist and he can do amazing things with his voice. Kees and Roman are both great intuitive guitar players. Bram, the bass player, has a different way of thinking about the world than most. It adds to being different.
Q: Who would you like to collaborate with?
A: Many, many people. We opened for Steve Vai last Saturday. A collaboration with him would be great. Big inspirations for us are Steve Grohl, Trent Reznor, Tom Yorke, John Williams.
Q: As an artist, how would you define success?
A: When you achieve what you want to achieve. You want to have defined for yourself what success is before you start.
Q: What makes your music unique?
A: The fact that we are playing it.
Q: How does music affect you and the world around you?
A: It brings us places. It affects many things, generally good things.
Q: Who are some of your non-musical influences?
A: Nelson Mandela, Nikola Tesla
Q: What’s the hardest part of what you do?
I hope you enjoyed and be sure to check NAVARONE the next chance you get!
